Swinging a ‘Star Wars’ lightsaber in VR feels amazing

I watched the Millennium Falcon land inches away from my face, and it was one of the coolest things that’s ever happened.

Star Wars: Trials On Tatooine is ILMxLab’s first big showing of what you can expect to see when virtual reality carries you to a galaxy far, far away. With the help of an HTC Vive headset, you’re deposited on the surface of Tatooine with a lightsaber in your hand and a squad of Imperial Stormtroopers advancing on your position.

The whole thing starts with a familiar Star Wars crawl, with scrolling text establishing that you are a Padawan in Luke Skywalker’s fledgling Jedi Order. The Empire has fallen and you’ve been sent to Tatooine on some mysterious training mission.

The story is of minimal importance here. It’s mostly there to let you stand in empty space and watch the familiar yellow text scroll by. If you’re going to be immersed in your own Star Wars adventure, how could it start anywhere else?
